Five checks separate a case that lasts a year from one that fails in a month, and every one of them is visible before you pay.
Most iPhone cases fail in five predictable ways. Drop claims with no figure attached, magnets that are not really there, lips that sit too low, backs that yellow, and buttons that go dead by month three. Here is how to check each one in under a minute, plus a finder that picks the right case for your phone.

1. Does the drop claim carry a number
Every case in the market says it protects against drops. Almost none of them say from how high, how many times, or onto what. That gap is where the money goes.
The reference point is MIL-STD-810, the military test method most protective case brands cite. In the version used for phone cases, the sample is dropped 26 times, from 1.22 metres, onto plywood over concrete, striking every face, edge and corner. That is the whole claim: a height, a count and a surface. If a listing says drop tested and gives you none of the three, you are looking at a claim that has not actually been made.
What to ask forA height in metres or feet. A number of drops. A surface. If the seller cannot produce all three, treat the case as a cosmetic cover and price it accordingly. That is a perfectly legitimate thing to buy, as long as you know that is what you are buying.
The second half of this check is structural. Protection comes from how the case absorbs and spreads energy, not from thickness. A hybrid build does this properly: a soft thermoplastic polyurethane frame takes the deformation at the edges, a rigid polycarbonate back stops the panel flexing into the phone, and airbag cushioning at the four corners absorbs the impact that actually kills phones. Corners take the hit in roughly nine drops out of ten.
2. Is there a real magnet ring
This is the check that costs people the most and gets skipped the most often. Three tiers of case are sold under the same vocabulary, and they behave completely differently.

The difference is not cosmetic. Magnetic alignment is what centres the charging coil, and a coil sitting a few millimetres off centre is the single most common cause of slow wireless charging. 3. How high do the lips sit
Two lips matter, and they protect the two most expensive pieces of glass on the phone.
The camera lip
Face the case down on a table and look at it from the side. The rim should sit clearly above the lens rings, so the lenses never touch the surface. Level is not enough. Grit on a table is harder than the coating on the lens, and a level rim guarantees contact every time you put the phone down. A raised metal ring holds that clearance longer than a moulded plastic one because it does not abrade.
The screen lip
Run a fingernail from the glass outward to the case edge. You want to feel a clear step up before the nail leaves the case. That step is what stops a face-down drop putting the display straight onto the floor. Cases that describe themselves as ultra thin frequently have no screen lip at all, which is a reasonable trade if you know you are making it.

4. What the back is made of, and whether it yellows
Clear cases yellow. It is a chemical certainty rather than a quality problem, and it comes from ultraviolet light acting on thermoplastic polyurethane. Anti-yellow formulations slow it down. What changes is how long you get, and whether the brand will stand behind it.

The practical rule for clear cases: buy one where the back panel is anti-yellow polycarbonate rather than TPU, and buy from someone who puts a warranty term against the yellowing specifically. If you do not need to see the phone, a coloured case removes the problem entirely. Liquid silicone with a microfiber lining is the version worth paying for: the outside stays dry rather than tacky, and the lining protects the back glass from the grit that gets inside every case eventually.
5. Buttons, cutouts and how it comes off
The failures that make people replace a case are almost never drops. They are the small things that degrade.
- Button feel. Press the volume buttons through the case before you commit. You want a defined click, not a mushy push. Moulded TPU buttons lose their spring within a few months. Metal buttons keep the action because the metal is not what is flexing.
- The Action button and Camera Control. On iPhone 16 and 17 these are not simple mechanical switches. The cutout has to leave the surface reachable rather than merely pressable. A case that covers Camera Control with a raised bump has broken a feature you paid for.
- Port clearance. Plug in your own USB-C cable, not the one in the shop. A cutout sized for a slim cable rejects the braided one you own.
- Speaker and mic cutouts. Open, not covered with a mesh. Covered grilles muffle speakerphone audio noticeably.
- Getting it off. A case you cannot remove without stretching it past its shape will not survive being removed. Flexible sides matter more than they sound like they do.
Who makes what, and how they differ
The case market splits into three camps, and knowing which camp a brand sits in tells you what you are buying before you read a word of the listing.

Do clear iPhone cases always turn yellow?
Every clear case yellows eventually, because ultraviolet light reacts with thermoplastic polyurethane. An anti-yellow polycarbonate back panel slows it considerably. Does a case slow down MagSafe charging?
A case without magnets lets the phone sit off centre on the charger, and misalignment is one of the most common causes of slow wireless charging. A case with a built-in magnetic ring centres the coil every time. Metal plates and cards between the phone and the charger cause the same problem.

How high should the camera lip be?
High enough that the lens rings never touch a flat surface when the phone is face down. Level with the lenses is not enough. A raised metal ring holds that clearance longer than moulded plastic because it does not abrade.
Which case is best for the iPhone 17 Air?

Should I buy the case and screen protector together?
